Making Magic

Wizards of the Coast (WotC), the game publisher behind juggernaut IP such as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering (MTG) chose IGN as their partner in promoting a slew of their upcoming products to coincide with their new MTG campaign, Summer of Magic.

We had done some work in the tabletop game category to varying degrees in the past, but our bread and butter was video games, so it was presented as a unique challenge.

The objective was to promote Friday Night Magic, a, typically in-person, tournament where players gather (sorry) at their local trading card store to play Magic on, you guessed it, a Friday night.

WotC had a very specific vision in mind when it came to the content that we would help them produce. They were adamant about us filming the action, on-location, at a popular store to coincide with a new product release.

Among these new products were crossovers with popular video game IP, hence the desire to leverage IGN and its reach.

We got in there and were able to produce a video that boasted high production value and information relevant to those unfamiliar with MTG but also veteran players.

Despite WotC establishing their mandate for the content, we were still able to express ourselves creatively and have IGN’s tone of voice shine through.
